Adjacent Recall Summary (05V520000): ON CERTAIN TRUCKS, PASSENGER CARS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR MAY HAVE BEEN PRODUCED WITHOUT GREASE BEING APPLIED TO THE OUTPUT SHAFT GEAR.

INOPERATIVE WIPERS UNDER INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS COULD CAUSE A CRASH DUE TO IMPAIRED VISIBILITY.

Manufacturer Remedy on 2006: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WIPER MOTOR FOR THE PRESENCE OF GREASE AND GREASE THE WIPER MOTOR GEARS IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 22, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673 OR LINCOLN/MERCURY AT 1-800-521-4140.

ODI #10618384 • Incident Date: 07/30/2014
WHEN TAKING MY VEHICLE OUT FOR TEST DRIVE AFTER PUTTING NEW BRAKES ON. WHILE DRIVING AN SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT. WHILE CHECKING ONLINE I FOUND THAT THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM. I WAS VERY UPSET TO FIND OUT FROM THE DEALER THAT IT'S GONNA COST $585.70 TO FIX ONE SPARK PLUG AND REPLACE COIL. I ASKED ABOUT REPLACING ALL THE PLUG AND THEY QUOTED $900 TO DO ALL OF THEM. AS A RETIREE OF FORD I THINK THIS IS CRAZY. THEY TELL YOU IN THE MANUAL THAT THE PLUGS ARE GOOD FOR 100,000 MILES. THE MECHANIC SAID THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT THIS WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN EVEN IF WE REPLACED ALL THE PLUGS. I'M THINKING OF TRADING MY TRUCK OFF AND AM CONSIDERING ANOTHER BRAND. *TR

#3 SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT WHILE TRAVELING AWAY FROM HOME IN ANOTHER STATE. IN DRIVING TWO MILES BACK TO MY SON'S HOUSE, I HAD TWO EXPLOSIONS FROM EXCESS GASOLINE AND SPARK PLUG FIRING. THE SPARK PLUGS WERE ORIGINAL AND BLEW OUT BECAUSE OF THE FINE THREADS AND ALUMINUM CYLINDER HEADS. THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT AND SAFETY PROBLEM KNOWN TO FORD. TOWING AND INSERT INSTALLATION BY A FORD DEALER WAS $950. THE ENGINE IS A 4.6 V-8 UPDATED 05/17/12 *BF

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE SPARK PLUGS WERE NOT TORQUED CORRECTLY, CAUSING THE SPARK PLUGS TO BE SPEWED FROM THE ENGINE BLOCK. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 87,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 120,000.

I PRESSED HARDER ON THE BRAKE AND THE VEHICLE JERKED AND SHUDDERED VIOLENTLY. MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS THAT I WAS STRUCK FROM BEHIND BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. I WAS ISSUED A VIOLATION FROM LOUISIANA STATE POLICE FOR FOLLOWING TOO CLOSELY. MY BELIEF IS THAT THE SHUDDERING WAS THE EFFECT OF THE ANTI LOCK BRAKES ACTIVATING. THE DAMAGE TO BOTH VEHICLES WAS RELATIVELY MINOR. THE VEHICLE WAS CHECKED FOR A DEFECT BUT NONE COULD BE FOUND.

WHILE APPROACHING A STOP DURING A HEAVY RAIN SHOWER I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A COMPLETE STOP ABOUT 10 FEET FROM THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. SUDDENLY, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED FORWARD.

Adjacent Recall Summary (03V349000): ON CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS, THE PITMAN ARM TO STEERING GEAR RETAINING NUT WAS NOT FULLY TIGHTENED TO THE REQUIRED SPECIFICATION.

Safety Consequence: IF THE PITMAN ARM TO GEARBOX ATTACHMENT NUT LOOSENS, A NOISE AND A LOOSE FEEL IN THE STEERING COULD OCCUR. IF THE CONDITION PROGRESSED AND SERVICE WAS NOT SOUGHT, THE NUT COULD BACK OFF COMPLETELY AND THE PITMAN ARM COULD SEPARATE FROM THE GEAR CAUSING A LOSS OF STEERING. IF THE WARNING IS NOT HEEDED AND STEERING IS LOST, A CRASH MAY RESULT.

Manufacturer Remedy on 2003: DEALERS WILL TIGHTEN THE PITMAN ARM RETAINING NUT TO SPECIFICATIONS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON OCTOBER 1, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-866-436-7332.

STEERING GETS VERY HARD TO TURN. HAVE TO "MUSCLE" THE STEERING BACK AFTER A TURN. POWER STEERING RACK FAILED. FORD MOTOR CO. HAS A NATIONAL BACK ORDER ON REPLACEMENT PARTS. I THINK THERE'S A PROBLEM.
ODI #10776514 • Incident Date: 09/16/2015
DRIVING VEHICLE HAVE NOTICED WHEN ENGINE IS IDLING, POWER STEERING IS SOMETIMES WEAK. FLUID IS REPLACED EVERY FALL, AS THE STEERING PUMP HAS BEEN A NOISY ONE SINCE THE TRUCK WAS NEW. DEALER SUGGESTED REPLACING FLUID WITH SYNTHETIC. IT WORKED THEN, SO I REPLACE IT EVERY YEAR. TODAY, WITH STEERING AT FULL LEFT LOCK, THE STEERING WAS STUCK AT THAT POINT. MOVED WHEEL BACK AND FORTH AND IT CAME LOOSE. HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE SINCE. AS A NOTE AT 5 YEARS OLD AND 53,000 MILES POWER STEERING PRESSURE HOSE SPRUNG A LEAK UNDER THE CLAMP AT THE FRAME. REPLACED WITH AFTER MARKET PART, AS DEALER COULDN'T GET THE PART. BACK ORDERED!
ODI #10662067 • Incident Date: 11/24/2014
CORROSION OF THE U-JOINTS ON THE LOWER STEERING SHAFT OF MY 2005 FORD F150 (4.6 L) IS CAUSING THE STEERING TO MALFUNCTION. STEERING WILL NOT RETURN TO CENTER AFTER TURNING, EVEN AT MODERATE SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE DRIVES AS IF IT HAS NO POWER STEERING. LUBRICATION OF THESE JOINTS WILL REMEDY THE PROBLEM FOR A PERIOD OF A WEEK OR SO, BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. THIS IS A KNOWN DESIGN FLAW THAT HAS BEEN RECALLED IN OTHER FORD MODELS WITHIN SIMILAR MANUFACTURE DATES. I LIVE IN A COLD WEATHER STATE WHERE THE PROBLEM IN THE RECALLED VEHICLES HAS BEEN NOTED TO BE MORE OF AN ISSUE. THERE ARE MANY ONLINE COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS DESIGN FLAW IN THE F150. THE COST FOR ME TO REPLACE THIS PART WILL RANGE FROM $300 TO $600. HOWEVER, THE REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE MADE WITHIN THE SAME ORIGINAL OEM DESIGN. THE PARTS NEED TO BE CORRECTED SO THAT REPLACEMENTS WILL NOT FALTER AS WELL. IT IS VERY SCARY TO THINK THAT I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO RELY ON MY STEERING DURING DIFFICULT WEATHER SITUATIONS. *JS
ODI #10615123 • Incident Date: 07/21/2014
I HAD PROBLEMS STEERING MY CAR FOR THE LAST 3 WEEKS. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT AND THEY REPLACED THE SHAFT 8L3Z-3B676-B. THE SERVICE TECH SAID THE CROWN VICTORIA HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND PART. HTTP://WWW.EDMUNDS.COM/CAR-NEWS/FORD-RECALLS-355000-VEHICLES-IN-US-FOR-POSSIBLE-STEERING-LOSS.HTML PLEASE DO SOMETHING, SO OTHER F150 OWNERS WILL BE WARNED, BEFORE THEY CRASH. THE REPAIR WAS OVER $400, BUT THAT MIGHT BE CHEAPER THAN CRASHING THE CAR. THANKS *TR
ODI #10572715 • Incident Date: 09/12/2012
THE STEERING WHEEL ON THIS 2005 IS EXTREMELY LOOSE AT THE TOP OF THE WHEEL AND FEELS VERY UNSECURED AS FAR AS IT BEING CONNECTED OR SECURED UNDERNEATH. IT IS ALSO DETERIORATING GREATLY IN THAT SAME AREA AT THE TOP OF THE WHEEL AND NEVER HAVE SEEN THIS BEFORE. THE REASON I AM SO CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF ME AND ESPECIALLY MY FAMILY WHERE WE HAD A HEAD-ON COLLISION AND WERE VERY LUCKY TO BE ALIVE. MY WIFE HAS NEVER FULLY RECUPERATED FROM THAT HORRIBLE NIGHT. FOR HER TO DRIVE MY PICKUP AND FEEL UNSAFE BECAUSE OF A DEFECT THAT THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY OBVIOUSLY OVERLOOKED OR IS NEGLECTING IS UNTHINKABLE. I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH DUE TO A FRIEND OF MINE WHICH WAS KILLED IN ONE OF YOUR FORD EXPLORERS MANY YEARS AGO DUE TO DEFECTIVE TIRES FROM FIRESTONE. *TR
