Sample 2017 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 Owner Complaints (POWER TRAIN)

ODI #11752385 • Incident Date: 07/09/2023
Vehicle would not shift through gears while driving. Torque converter shudder. Dealer found excessive metal in trans pan. Had to replace transmission. Vehicle had 107, 000 miles. Almost $5700 to replace transmission.
ODI #11752116 • Incident Date: 02/15/2026
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond as intended and the vehicle lost power. The contact merged onto the right side of the road, turned off and restarted the vehicle and the vehicle worked as intended; however, after driving fifteen miles down the road, the failure persisted. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic or dealer to be diagnosed. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on several occasions. The transmission was replaced, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 113,800.
ODI #11750249 • Incident Date: 03/23/2024
Torque converter clutch failed and sent metal chips through the transmission causing the transmission to fall and made the truck not drivable. The check engine light came on a few hours before the transmission finally gave out. The transmission would not shift out of first gear. We were on a family trip to [XXX] from [XXX] and this left us stranded with three kids in the truck on the side of the road. When I took the truck to the shop they asked several other transmission shops if they had seen this issue and they all confirmed they did with the same truck and the best case is to rebuild the transmission instead of replacing the just the torque converter clutch due to the amount of damage it did. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ODI #11735148 • Incident Date: 04/24/2026
A well known issue with the torque converter failing due to poor manufacturing and design. Allowing debris to enter the filter system due to the torque converter falling apart. Causing astronomical amounts in repair costs
ODI #11735196 • Incident Date: 05/01/2026
Transmission is hunting for gear when decelerating. Back and forth it tries to change gear. Just started. I have 64,000 miles on the truck. At 22,000 it started shuddering and the fluid was changed which corrected the issue then. At 53,000 the shudder returned and I paid the dealerdealership to replace the torque converter. Now 12,000 miles later I'm having a shifting issue. This Transmission seems to be problematic.

Adjacent Recall Summary (19V888000): General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks. The battery positive (B+) cable rings may have been manufactured with excessive glue, potentially causing an intermittent electrical connection between the B+ cable and alternator.

Safety Consequence: An intermittent electrical connection between the B+ battery cable and the alternator could cause the vehicle to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. The intermittent connection could also lead to electrical arcing, which could generate sufficient heat to damage surrounding material, increasing the risk of a fire.

Manufacturer Remedy on 2019: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect for the presence of glue or other contamination at the B+ cable attachment to the alternator and clean the connection and reattach the B+ cable connection, as necessary. If arcing has damaged the cable, nut, or alternator, the dealer will replace the damaged components. All services will be performed free of charge. GM issued owners an interim notification on February 4, 2020. GM issued second notice and the recall began March 9, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267. GM's number for this recall is N192273510.

The rear window of my 2017 Chevy Silverado exploded. I had the rear defrosters on, and they malfunctioned. I thought I smelled something hot before this happened. I am surprised this didn't cause a fire. I have researched this issue, and it appears to be an ongoing problem with the 2014 - 2019 Silverado and Sierra trucks. In fact, Canada has a recall on this issue, but the U.S. does not. Why is that?
ODI #11694790 • Incident Date: 10/18/2025 [FIRE]
After starting the vehicle. I heard a hissing noise coming from the rear of the cabin. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw a large amount smoke rising from the box where the rear defroster power connects to the window. I immediately shut the vehicle off, got out and walked around the passenger side of the vehicle. As I approached the passenger rear door, the rear passenger window exploded with a Loud pop, shooting glass across the bed of the truck. I know there is currently a recall for this issue in Canada.

Statutory vs. Discretionary Remedies: Because your vehicle model year is currently excluded from official NHTSA campaign 21V115000, authorized dealerships are not legally mandated under federal law (49 U.S.C. Section 30120) to perform free recall repairs on your vehicle.

Discretionary Goodwill Policies: The Goodwill Reference Packet generated below compiles public NHTSA safety records to assist you in requesting a voluntary, discretionary warranty adjustment from your dealership service director or manufacturer customer care division. Goodwill assistance is not an entitlement, is not guaranteed, and is granted solely at the discretion of the manufacturer and dealership based on vehicle age, mileage, and brand loyalty.

Adjacent Recall Summary (21V115000): General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT4, XT5, Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, 2018-2021 Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, 2019-2020 Chevrolet Blazer, Silverado 1500, GMC Acadia, Sierra 1500, and certain Continental tires sold to the aftermarket for various model year 2018-2021 vehicles. The affected tires were cured for too long during production.

Safety Consequence: Over cured tires may develop a break in the sidewall resulting in sudden air loss or a belt edge separation which could lead to a tread/belt loss. Either condition can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Manufacturer Remedy on 2019: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tires, replacing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 22, 2021. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Buick customer service at 1-866-608-8080, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. Sample 2017 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 Owner Complaints (TIRES)

ODI #11518644 • Incident Date: 04/23/2023
My 2017 Chevy Silverado has four General Tires 285/45 R22 114 H installed. DOT HW6T HMW1 on all four tires. We had driven to Ohio from NY over the weekend and on the return trip (about 900 miles into the trip) the air pressure light came on and I noticed the Rear Driver side tire had 23 lbs of air. The leak was slow enough that I was able to drive 2 miles to a exit and stop at a gas station. When I got out I could hear the air leaking from the tire but could not see any visible issue yet. After jacking up the truck and removing the tire that's when I notice the tread was completely splitting away from the tire. See pictures. The tread had split about 3/4 of the way around the tire. Although this tire is not on the list for the recall 21T001000 the defect description matches.

OUR 2017 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 WAS PURCHASED NEW FROM THE DEALERSHIP IN AUGUST 2017. THE TIRES THAT CAME WITH THE TRUCK ARE CONTINENTAL CROSSCONTACT LX20. I BEGAN TO NOTICE CHUNKS OF RUBBER TREAD COMING OFF OF ALL 4 TIRES WHEN THEY HAD APPROXIMATELY 27,000 MILES. I HAD THEM INSPECTED AT THE DEALERSHIP DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS. I WAS TOLD IT WAS NORMAL WEAR FOR THESE TIRES. THE TIRES ARE RATED FOR 70,000 MILES. I CURRENTLY HAVE 36,500 MILES ON MY VEHICLE AND TOOK IT IN FOR REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND TIRE ROTATION. I WAS TOLD THAT THE TIRES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO PITTING AND CHUNKING. THERE IS GOOD TREAD LEFT ON THE TIRES, HOWEVER THE RUBBER IS COMING OFF IN HUGE CHUNKS ON ALL 4 TIRES. THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN CONTACTED TO ADDRESS MY CONCERNS.
