THE PROBLEM I HAVE BEEN HAVING HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR ALMOST A YEAR. THE STEERING WHEEL SEEMS TO HAVE A "DEAD SPOT" IN IT WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED 3/4 TURN TO 1 COMPLETE TURN. YOU CAN FEEL THE SLACK IN THE STEERING BOX WHEN MAKING A TURN(LEFT OR RIGHT)THE STEERING WHEEL WILL HAVE UP TO 2 1/2 INCHES OF "FREE PLAY" WHEN TURNING(THERE IS NO "FREE PLAY" WHEN DRIVING STRAIGHT) IT HAS BEEN DOING THIS SINCE THE DAY I BOUGHT THE PICKUP NEW OFF OF THE LOT. I HAVE HAD IT LOOKED AT SINCE THEN AND BEEN TOLD BY GM MECHANICS THAT IT IS THE STEERING GEAR. IF YOU TIGHTEN UP THE STEERING GEAR IT WILL TAKE THE "FREE PLAY" OUT, BUT THE STEERING WILL BE MORE SENSITIVE WHEN DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. SO TIGHTENING UP THE STEERING GEAR SOLVES ONE PROBLEM BUT CAUSES PROBLEMS ELSEWHERE??? ACCORDING TO THE FEDERAL MOTOR CARRIER SAFETY ADMINISTRATION(FMCSA) SECTION 393.209 STEERING WHEEL SYSTEMS. THAT(DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF STEERING WHEEL) THE STEERING WHEEL LASH SHALL NOT EXCEED 14 DEGREES ANGULAR ROTATION FOR MANUAL STEERING OR 30 DEGREES ANGULAR ROTATION FOR POWER STEERING SYSTEMS AT ANY GIVEN POSITION OF THE STEERING WHEEL. WITH RULES AND REGULATIONS LIKE THAT ON COMMERCIAL VEHICLES, HOW IS MY PERSONAL VEHICLE CONSIDERED "SAFE" WITH 2 1/2 INCHES OF "FREE PLAY" IN THE STEERING WHEEL??? *JS

Important Notice Regarding Recall Gaps & Dealership Goodwill Requests

Statutory vs. Discretionary Remedies: Because your vehicle model year is currently excluded from official NHTSA campaign 18V291000, authorized dealerships are not legally mandated under federal law (49 U.S.C. Section 30120) to perform free recall repairs on your vehicle.

Discretionary Goodwill Policies: The Goodwill Reference Packet generated below compiles public NHTSA safety records to assist you in requesting a voluntary, discretionary warranty adjustment from your dealership service director or manufacturer customer care division. Goodwill assistance is not an entitlement, is not guaranteed, and is granted solely at the discretion of the manufacturer and dealership based on vehicle age, mileage, and brand loyalty.

Adjacent Recall Summary (18V291000): General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Tahoe Police Pursuit and Special-Service vehicles. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.

Safety Consequence: If the pretensioner cable becomes fatigued or breaks, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.

Manufacturer Remedy on 2015: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the pretensioner cable and seat side-shield, free of charge. The recall began June 19, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 18156.
