ODI #11181344 • Incident Date: 02/20/2019
THE ENGINE "AUTO STOP" FEATURE CAN HAVE ENOUGH OF A DELAY TO ALLOW THE ACCELERATOR TO BE PRESSED AS THE ENGINE STARTS CAUSING IT TO LURCH FORWARD RATHER THAN ACCELERATE SMOOTHLY. IT ALSO CAN CAUSE A DELAY WHEN PULLING OUT INTO HEAVY TRAFFIC. THERE IS CURRENTLY NO WAY TO TEMPORARILY OR PERMANENTLY DEFEAT THE SYSTEM ON THIS GM MODEL ACCORDING TO GM SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THOUGH I AM SURE IT IS OPERATING AS DESIGNED FOR CERTAIN OWNER DRIVING STYLES AND TRAFFIC CONDITIONS THIS CAN BE A SERIOUS HAZARD. CAR MAKERS SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO EITHER DISABLE THE FEATURE PERMANENTLY BY OWNER REQUEST OR HAVE A METHOD FOR THE OWNER TO BYPASS THE SYSTEM. WITH LESS THAN 250 MILES I HAVE EXPERIENCED 2 INCIDENTS OF ALMOST HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME FROM A STOP AND 1 OF ALMOST BEING HIT PULLING INTO HEAVY TRAFFIC FROM A STOP. I SEE MANY OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS AND HOPE THIS CAN BE ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE IS HURT OR WORSE DUE TO IT.

AT 10,000 MILES MY 2019 CHEVROLET MALIBU STARTED TO SPUTTER AND LOSE POWER. TAKING OFF AT A GREEN LIGHT, DRIVING ON HIGHWAYS, TURNING AT INTERSECTIONS, OR TURNING AGAINST TRAFFIC HAS ALL BECOME DANGEROUS BECAUSE THE CAR WILL NOT GATHER ENOUGH POWER TO GO, LEAVING MY CAR STUCK ON ROADS AND IN THE MIDDLE OF INTERSECTIONS. WE WERE PLACED IN A RENTAL 2019 CHEVROLET MALIBU WITH 11,000 MILES THAT ALSO HAD POWER PROBLEMS AND LEFT US STUCK IN A RUNNING CAR BEING APPROACHED BY ONCOMING TRAFFIC.. THE DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSTIC CAME UP AS TRANSMISSION FAILURE, IN MULTIPLE BRAND NEW 2019 CHEVROLET MALIBU'S. ME, MY FAMILY, AND HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF MOTORISTS ARE IN DANGER BY DRIVING THIS CAR, OR EVEN BEING ON THE ROAD WITH THESE CARS.

THE 2019 MALIBU OWN WHICH IS AN LT WITH A SUNROOF AND HEATED FRONT SEATS, HAS HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE BATTERY CONNECTION WHERE AS THE CAR WAS BRAND NEW OUT FROM THE SHOP. AND THEN A WEEK OR TWO LATER I GOT INTO MY CAR TO LOOK FOR MY HEADPHONES, THEN I JUST WANTED TO SIT INSIDE MY BRAND NEW CAR FOR A MOMENT. AND THEN I TURNED THE RADIO ON TO LOOK AT THE TIME, AND THEN THE GAUGE CLUSTER CAME UP WITH A MESSAGE SAYING BATTERY VOLTAGE LOW. SO THEN LATER WE GOT AN EMAIL FROM CHEVY TALKING ABOUT THE ISSUE AND HOW CHEVY WOULD LIKE TO FIX IT FOR US. SO THEY FIXED IT. BUT I WOULD LIKE FOR OTHER PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT THIS. ALSO! I HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY SUNROOF WHICH ISN'T A SAFETY CONCERN BUT IT'S WORTH NOTING. SO AS WE GOT THE CAR. WE DIDN'T KNOW WHY THE SUNROOF WOULDN'T OPEN WHILE WE WERE DRIVING OR ANYTHING. AND SO WHEN WE GOT HOME WE TRIED FIGURING IT OUT AND AT THE TIME IT WOULD ONLY OPEN UP IF YOU HAVE YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE, IN DRIVE WITHOUT MOVING. GOT IT FIXED AFTER TRYING TO GET THEM TO FIX IT. AND THEN THEY MESSED UP THE HEADLINER IN THE CAR AND HAD TO GET THAT REPLACED AND THEN THEY WANT TO TRY AND CHARGE US FOR USING THEIR LOANER CARS WHEN THEY MESSED UP THE HEADLINER. LIKE WTF.

ODI #11425021 • Incident Date: 04/05/2021
Get “Shift to Park” message when car is placed in park and turn off ignition. This seems to be a common error reported widely on 2016 through 2020 Chevrolet vehicles. I have even seen service bulletins mentioned. Why has Chevrolet not recalled this since it seems to be a weak switch used? This is not covered under the bumper to bumper warranty since I have 54,000 miles on a two year old car. This shouldn’t be failing after two years. Maybe after 10 years but not two!
ODI #11443033 • Incident Date: 11/12/2021
The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the check engine warning light was illuminated, and the fuel gauge reflected EMPTY even though the tank was FULL. The contact stated she used the parking brake to stop the vehicle before it seized. The contact stated when shifting gears to park, she heard an abnormal noise and the vehicle began to hesitate. The contact stated an independent mechanic came to the work parking lot and was informed it was an electrical system failure and was referred to the local dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact towed the vehicle to the local dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated she continued to experience the failure. Important Notice Regarding Recall Gaps & Dealership Goodwill Requests

Statutory vs. Discretionary Remedies: Because your vehicle model year is currently excluded from official NHTSA campaign 18V400000, authorized dealerships are not legally mandated under federal law (49 U.S.C. Section 30120) to perform free recall repairs on your vehicle.

Discretionary Goodwill Policies: The Goodwill Reference Packet generated below compiles public NHTSA safety records to assist you in requesting a voluntary, discretionary warranty adjustment from your dealership service director or manufacturer customer care division. Goodwill assistance is not an entitlement, is not guaranteed, and is granted solely at the discretion of the manufacturer and dealership based on vehicle age, mileage, and brand loyalty.

Adjacent Recall Summary (18V400000): General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles. During servicing, a Passenger Presence System (PPS) may have been installed that was not correctly calibrated to the vehicle's seat type. As a result, the PPS may not properly identify an adult passenger from a child passenger in the front passenger seat, potentially causing the air bag to not deploy when it should, or causing the air bag to deploy when it shouldn't.

Safety Consequence: In the event of a crash, improper air bag deployment can increase the risk of injury.

Manufacturer Remedy on 2017, 2018: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger PPS seat service kit, free of charge. The recall began August 7, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 18208.
