Adjacent Recall Summary (06V417000): CERTAIN VEHICLES ORIGINALLY BUILT WITH CLOTH SEATS THAT WERE EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC AIR BAG PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM AND LATER REUPHOLSTERED WITH AFTERMARKET LEATHER SEAT COVER KITS ARE INVOLVED. TESTING HAS INDICATED THAT THE AFTERMARKET LEATHER SEAT COVERS CAN CAUSE THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM TO MALFUNCTION.

Safety Consequence: IF THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS, THE FRONT AIR BAG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE MAY BE DISABLED WHEN IT SHOULD BE ENABLED, OR ENABLED WHEN IT SHOULD BE DISABLED. IN EITHER CASE, IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH THAT REQUIRES AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, A FRONT PASSENGER'S LEVEL OF INJURY MAY BE INCREASED.

Manufacturer Remedy on 2006: BECAUSE A REPLACEMENT LEATHER SEAT COVER THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM IS NOT AVAILABLE, GENERAL MOTORS (GM) WILL REPURCHASE THESE VEHICLES IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TERMS STATED IN GM'S LETTER TO OWNERS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 6, 2006. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT GM AT 1-877-477-1022 TO BEGIN THE PROCESS OF REPURCHASING THEIR VEHICLE.

MODERN VEHICLES ARE BUILT WITH THE SUN VISOR BUILT INTO THE CEILING OF THE VEHICLE TO AVOID "SCALPING" THE OCCUPANTS DURING A CRASH. HOWEVER, ON MY 2008 CHEVY MALIBU LTZ, THE VISOR IS NOT BUILT INTO THE CEILING AND HAS THE ABILITY TO "SCALP" SOMEONE WHEN THEY ARE INVOLVED IN A TRAFFIC CRASH. THIS APPEARS TO BE A DESIGN DEFECT ON THIS NEW MODEL. *TR
ODI #10249208 • Incident Date: 09/18/2008
I HAVE BOUGHT THIS CHEVROLET MALIBU 2008 BRAND NEW CAR TWO MONTHS AGO. WHEN I BOUGHT IT I DROVE THE CAR AND I ASKED THE CUSTOMER REPRESENTATIVE IF THERE IS SOMETHING ON THE WINDSHIELD. THE REP. FROM DEAN MYERS SAID IS NOTHING AND IT GETS OFF WHEN IS DETAILED. IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE LIKE THAT AS I CAN NOT SEE CLEAR THROUGH ALL THE WINDSHIELDS SO I GOT THE CAR IN FOR INSPECTION. THEY SAID IS NOT THEIR FAULT AND CALLED A GM REPRESENTATIVE. THEY SAID IS NOT THEIR FAULT AS WELL. AT THE END THEY ADVISED ME TO GET IN TOUCH WITH MY INSURANCE AS IT COULD HAVE BEEN AN "ACID RAIN OR SOMETHING". THE CAR WAS LIKE THIS WHEN I BOUGHT IT AND I BOUGHT LIFETIME WARRANTY FOR INSIDE OUTSIDE. THIS IS A RIDICULOUS RESOLUTION FOR MY PROBLEM. I DIDN'T NOTICED THOUGH THIS PROBLEM GOT WORST WHEN THEY RUST PROOF IT. DO NOT BUY FROM DEAN MAYERS CAR DEALER FROM TORONTO!!! *TR
ODI #10273301 • Incident Date: 06/08/2009
THE SUNROOF IN MY 2008 CHEVY MALIBU BEGAN RATTLING WHEN IN FULL OPEN POSITION. IT FINALLY EXPLODED, SPRAYING THE ENTIRE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT (AND MYSELF) WITH GLASS. *TR

Sample 2008 CHEVROLET MALIBU Owner Complaints (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE)

ODI #10410009 • Incident Date: 06/29/2011
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATED THAT UPON ENTERING THE VEHICLE HE SMELLED A STRONG FUEL ODOR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A GASOLINE STATION TO BE REFUELED, BUT THE FUEL TANK WOULD ONLY ACCEPT A SMALL AMOUNT OF FUEL. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS LEAKING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 98,291.
ODI #10437613 • Incident Date: 10/13/2010
FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT NOT OPERATING PROPERLY. STARTED OUT DROPPING TO EMPTY AND ACTIVATING THE TROUBLE LIGHT AND LOW FUEL DISPLAY WHEN THERE WAS STILL HALF A TANK OF FUEL. NOW IT DOES IT WITH 3/4 TANK OR MORE. AFTER THE FUEL GETS LOWER THAN 3/4 TANK OFTEN THE FUEL GAUGE WILL DROP TO EMPTY AND STAY THERE UNTIL I FILL THE TANK BACK UP THEN THE GAUGE WILL ONLY MOVE TO FULL AFTER DRIVING A BIT. *KB
ODI #10442247 • Incident Date: 01/20/2011
GAS GAUGE FLUCTUATES FROM EMPTY TO FULL MOSTLY REMAINS IN THE EMPTY POSITION EXCEPT AFTER A TURN OR A START/STOP. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. I HAVE ANOTHER 2008 CHEVY MALIBU (THAT MY SON DRIVES), VIN # [XXX] WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THE MILEAGE AT FAILURE FOR THAT VEHICLE WAS ABOUT 40000 MILES. I WAS TOLD BY CHEVY CUSTOMER SERVICE REP THAT THESE VIN #S ARE NOT ON THE LIST ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA # 10030685. I CONTEND THAT THERE IS A MATERIAL AND/OR DESIGN DEFECT WITH THE FUEL SENSOR ON THESE VEHICLES AND THAT A RECALL SHOULD HAVE BEEN INITIATED BY GENERAL MOTORS. FURTHERMORE, THIS FAILURE CAN REPRESENT A SIGNIFICANT HAZARD TO DRIVER AND PASSENGERS OF AFFECTED VEHICLES. I BELIEVE OWNING TWO OF THE SAME MAKE, MODEL, AND YEAR VEHICLES WITH THE SAME PROBLEM REPRESENTS A MORE THAN RANDOM OCCURRENCE. I THEREFORE REQUEST THE NHTSA TO CONDUCT AN INVESTIGATION INTO THIS EQUIPMENT FAILURE AND POSSIBLE SAFETY HAZARD. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
ODI #10448144 • Incident Date: 02/02/2012
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER REFUELING, THE SENDING UNIT FRACTURED AND FELL INTO THE FUEL TANK. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE FUEL LEVEL GAUGE BEGAN PERFORMING ERRATICALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY ADVISED THAT THE SENDING UNIT WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE SENDING UNIT WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 69,700.
ODI #10481681 • Incident Date: 09/21/2012
GM IS RECALLING 40000 CARS FOR A FUEL LEAK FROM THE FUEL PUMP MODULE ON THE TOP OF THE TANK. I ORIGINALLY HEARD THAT THIS WAS FOR CARS IN THE SOUTHWEST REGION OF THE COUNTRY. MY DAUGHTER LIVES IN PHOENIX, DRIVES A 2005 PONTIAC G6, AND HAD A FUEL LEAK COMING FROM A PLASTIC FITTING ATTACHED TO THE FUEL PRESSURE RETURN LINE. THE FUEL WAS RUNNING ACROSS THE TOP OF THE TANK ACROSS THE PROTECTIVE SHIELD AND ONTO THE MUFFLER IN SMALL AMOUNTS. FORTUNATELY WE REPLACED THE PUMP/INDICATOR SENDING UNIT BEFORE A FIRE TOOK PLACE. I LIVE IN TUCSON AND DRIVE A 2008 CHEVY MALIBU LT. A FEW WEEKS AGO I NOTICED THE SMELL OF GAS AT THE REAR OF THE CAR AFTER IT WAS PARKED. NO EVIDENCE OF A LEAK LIKE MY DAUGHTER"S CAR, BUT A STRONG SMELL. I JACKED THE CAR AND LOOKED UNDERNEATH FOR A LEAK, BUT FOUND NONE. THE SMELL OF FUEL WAS STRONGER IN THE AREA OF THE WIRING HARNESS AND FUEL LINES GOING TO THE TOP OF THE TANK. DO YOU KNOW OF A RECALL FOR MY MODEL OF CAR? IT SEEMS LIKE A TREND WITH THIS PARTICULAR DESIGN OF FUEL SYSTEM.
